Chapter Thirteen

Annalise knew she had messed up.

“What happened just now?” her mother asked.

"I didn't want to explain it like this, but I guess I have to. I did something awful. I hurt Veronica," Annalise said.

Annalise felt the tears falling. She put her head in her hands as she sobbed. Her mother embraced Annalise as she continued to cry.

“It’s okay. We all mess up,” Georgie said.

"No, Mom, I screwed up this time. There is something I've wanted to tell you for a while, for years even, and I didn't have the guts to do it. I feel like I'm trash, not even worthy of anything," she sobbed.

Her mother pulled away and looked into Annalise’s eyes with care and love.

“Anna, you’re my daughter. I raised you on my own. You’ve always been an amazing woman, and I’m so proud of you. You can tell me exactly what is going on.”

Annalise felt the thump of her heart begin to become louder as she stared at her mother. She knew that her mother would understand that it would be okay, but there was something that made her not want to say it out loud. She was worried her mother might abandon her, as Veronica's parents did to her.

“You promise you won’t leave...right?” Annalise asked.

“Anna, you’re stuck with me. I’m your mom. As long as you aren’t doing anything illegal, I don’t care.”

Annalise took a deep breath, her heart racing at the speed of light as she finally spoke the words she wanted to say.

“I’m gay, and I’m in love with Veronica.”

When Annalise said those words, her mother looked at her. Annalise couldn’t read her face, which worried her.

“It took you that long to admit it?” Georgie asked.

Annalise blushed, feeling like her mother’s gaze wasn’t that of malice, but almost like she knew.

“What do you mean?” Annalise asked.

“You thought I didn’t know? I had a feeling for a long time you were gay, Anna. I didn’t want to pry or ask, but I’ve had a feeling you were either not interested in a relationship or gay.”

Annalise couldn't believe it! Her mother thought that she was gay all this time?

“Why didn’t you say anything?” Annalise asked.

“Because I didn’t feel like it was my place to say. Anna. I was a bit nervous asking my daughter whether or not she was seeing a woman, or if she was interested in sex altogether. I don’t hate you for it. Honestly, I’m happy that you know your feelings, and you know how you feel about Veronica.”

“So, you’re not mad, right?”

"Course I'm not. I wasn't expecting grandkids from you anyway. I don't hate you at all for it. You're just yourself," Georgie explained.

Annalise breathed out a sigh of relief as she heard those words. “Okay good, because I was worried,” she said.

"Though, I do think you and Veronica will need to talk. I wish you told me sooner. It would've made what transpired a whole lot less awkward."

“I know. I don’t know how to approach it,” Annalise said sighing.

“I know. I’m not a relationship expert at all, but I do think you two need to have a little chat.
